Records tumbled at the oldest golf course in continental Europe as former Ryder Cup player Brian Waites romped to a four-shot victory in the inaugural Elf Seniors Open at Pau Golf Club, southern France.

After opening with two rounds of 66 he shot a final round of 63 to equal the course record and secure the title with a 12-under-par total of 195. In the process he became the first Senior Tour player to break 200 for 54 holes. Ireland’s Denis O’Sullivan, runner-up for the second successive week, also broke 200 with a birdie at the last for rounds of 68, 64 and 67.

For Waites it was his first win in over a year, his sixth European Seniors Tour title, and comes only seven years after an horrific car crash which put him in hospital for three months and left him wondering if he would ever walk again.

"It's a miracle. To come from lying in that hospital bed wondering if I would walk again to winning again is fantastic," he said. "I never looked like getting into trouble at any stage. Normally I try to hit the ball as hard as I can but this time I was playing very much within myself. I just stayed out of trouble. I've been out of sorts with my putter since the Senior British Open but it all just came back this week. I'm over the moon."

Waites picked up six birdies during the final round, including one on each of the last three holes, to surge clear of the chasing pack. Indeed he only dropped one shot all week, and that on the fourth hole during the first round.

Waites and O’Sullivan started the final day level on six under par, with another Irishman Arnold O’Connor a shot back. Waites made the first move, holing from 25 feet on the third but O’Sullivan immediately followed him, holing from 20 feet. When O’Sullivan three putted the fourth Waites moved into the lead he never relinquished. O’Sullivan bounced back with a birdie at the seventh, but when Waites birdied the ninth and 11th he was two shots clear and the rest of the field was left trailing in his wake. Three birdies in the last three holes sealed a memorable victory.

O'Sullivan, playing his rookie season as a professional after a highly successful amateur career, missed a number of birdie putts during the early stages and over the closing stretch found himself scrambling for pars to stay in touch.

"I missed a lot of putts early on but then holed some great putts in the last few holes to stay out of trouble," he said. "I would never have thought that such low scores were possible. I'm delighted to have broken 200 and I'm sure I'm going to win sometime."

O'Connor’s challenge ended on the par-three 15th when he pushed his tee shot into a water hazard and eventually finished with a triple-bogey six. He finished in joint sixth on 203, four-under-par.

South African John Fourie joined the leaders briefly after picking up five birdies in the first seven holes to move to seven under par. His run of six consecutive threes in the first six holes only ended with a birdie four on the par-five seventh, but after dropping a shot on the ninth he made no further progress and finished with a 65 for third place on 201, six-under-par.
