Melbourne professional Bob Shearer emerged from a nail-biting final round with five under par 67 and a one shot victory in the Philips PFA Classic at Meon Valley, Southampton.
The former Australian Open champion accumulated a 12 under par 204, his flawless, five birdie closing round holding off a chasing pack at one stage over the closing holes involving eight players within a shot of the lead.
One of them was Shearer's fellow countrymanTerry Gale who equalled the course record with a 65. It earned him a share of second spot on 11 under 205 with American J R Delich (68).
It was Shearer's second senior title having won the Jersey Open in his second Seniors Tour event last year. He collected 23 titles worldwide before joining the seniors.
"I had a strange feeling last night that I was going to win," he said. 'I knew it was going to be my week when I holed a 40-yard pitch for an eagle in the second round. It's good to beat my old mate Terry. We've had a few battles in the past and I knew he was breathing down my neck."
Also on is heels was Europe's leading senior, Tommy Horton. The Channel Islander made his customary late charge from five behind to nudge within two shots of the lead at one stage He finally closed with a 66 for 206 and a share of fourth with Scotland's David Huish (69) and Spain's former Ryder Cup
player Antonio Garrido (70).
Northern Ireland's overnight leader David Jones, beaten in a play-off for the title last year, had a bad day with his putter slipping to a 73 for 8th place.
Huish, from North Berwick, now employing Horton's former caddie Roy Holland, played solidly for 17 holes, his big flaw being a mis-hit tee shot at the 11th where he hit a tree and ran up a double bogey six.
"It cost me the tournamet," he said.
