Sid Denham, a former London firefighter, set the first round of the Swiss Seniors Open alight with an opening five under par 67 at Bad Ragaz, near Zurich.
The 53-year-old senior rookie achieved it with the help of five two's on his card, one of them an eagle at the second where he holed a 105-yard wedge shot.
His six birdies also included a two at the 17th where he holed out with a bunker shot.
Allthough he burdened his card with three bogeys, he needed his 70-year-old hickory-shafted putter only 26 times.
Denham said: "That was some round. Certainly my best score as a senior. But I have been working hard with my irons and trying to achieve better rhythm. I guess it must have worked today".
Denham is just a shot off the pace set by Northern Ireland's Paul Leonard who played flawless golf sprinkled with six birdies for is 64.
