Scotland’s David Huish defends the Dalmahoy Scottish Seniors Open this week hoping the magnificent course at the foot of the Pentland Hills will inspire him to his first victory of the season.
The North Berwick Professional has finished runner-up twice this year and was challenging for the title last week at Ferndown GC before fading over the closing holes to finish fifth. Huish currently occupies 13th place in the European Seniors Tour Order of Merit but could move into the top ten with a strong finish this week.
Twelve months ago he defeated Northern Ireland’s David Jones at the second hole of a sudden-death play-off after both players finished on 273, 15 under par. Both players are back in action again this week.
Tommy Horton has the chance to return to the top of the Order of Merit if he finishes in the top two this week, overtaking Christy O’Connor Jnr who is concentrating his efforts on the US Senior Tour over the next few weeks. Horton is 13,231 euro behind the Irishman but with 23,100 euro available for the winner and 15,400 for second, there is a real opportunity to return to Number One.
Last week’s champion Ross Metherell is also in the field along with most of the season’s champions -Horton, David Oakley, Bob Shearer, Jones, Eddie Polland, Alan Tapie, and Neil Coles - in what is one of the strongest fields of the year.
Former Ryder Cup captain Bernard Gallacher returns to his native Scotland for his first tournament since joining the senior ranks earlier this year. Other Scots in the field include two successful graduates from the Seniors Qualifying School – Gordon MacDonald and John McTear. Former Ryder Cup player Norman Wood, Gordon Gray, Don McCart and Bill Lockie complete the Scottish contingent.
Set in woodlands at the foot of the Pentland Hills just outside Edinburgh, Marriott Dalmahoy Hotel and Country Club will provide a stern test for senior golfers. This is the second year the event has been played at the Marriott Dalmahoy which has played host to regular Tour events in the early 1970’s and more recently the Solheim Cup in 1992.
