HRH Prince Albert of Monaco and Hollywood actor Kevin Costner, the star of the film Tin Cup, and will host a new European Seniors Tour event to be held in Monaco this week.
For the senior professionals the race is hotting up for a place in the season ending Praia D’el Rey Rover European Cup against the Ladies European Tour. The top eight in the Seniors Order of Merit after the Tournament of Champions qualify automatically with the last two places being the pick of the captain, Tommy Horton.
Australian Bob Shearer, winner of two events this year, and David Oakley, winner at Mill Ride, currently occupy the last two automatic spots but the Northern Irish pair of Eddie Polland and David Jones will be looking to advance from ninth and tenth places.
With a total purse of 175,000 euro, and a first prize of 28,000 euro a number of players have an opportunity to move up the Order of Merit. Tommy Horton has the chance to move back to the top of the list in his bid for a fourth successive season having closed the gap on Christy O’Connor Jnr to only 8,139 euro (£5,814).
Among the International stars in the field is Calvin Peete, a member of the US Ryder Cup team in 1983 and 1985.
Costner, who played the part of a young professional who found himself leading the US Open until hitting countless shots into the water, will head the celebrity guests from around the world for the International Celebrity Pro-Am tournament.
The 54-hole Monte Carlo Invitational featuring 44 European Seniors Tour players will include, Richard Branson, Boris Becker, ice hockey legend Wayne Gretzky and model Carol Alt.
The week’s activities will culminate in a Gala Dinner at the Sporting Club at Monte Carlo where all monies will go towards the worthy charitable causes.
Many of the current European Seniors Tour players will be familiar with Mont Agel from their days on the regular Tour..
Seniors players who competed in past Monte Carlo Opens include Tommy Horton, who finished tied ninth in the inaugural event, Maurice Bembridge, Renato Campagnoli, Neil Coles, Bernard Gallacher, Eddie Polland, and Brian Waites.
