Northern Ireland’s Paul Leonard returns to Holland this week to defend the title he won in sensational style twelve months ago.

It was his maiden European Seniors and he won by a huge seven shot margin after turning back the clock 20 years to use an unorthodox putting method he first used on Tour in the 1970’s. By gripping the putter just six inches above the head, Leonard rolled in 14 birdies and dropped only two shots in 54 holes at the Efteling Golf Park.

This year the European Seniors Tour as back in Holland for the second successive year but at a new venue. The Ordina Legends in Golf is being hosted by Prise d’Eau GC, situated in the southern region of the Netherlands between Tilburg and Breda., the course was designed by American Ronald Fream.

Leonard will be hoping to repeat the feat this year to move up the European Seniors Tour Order of Merit.

Tommy Horton moved back to the top of the Order of Merit, a position he has made his own over the past three seasons, with his victory in Monte Carlo last week. It was his second victory of the season and took his season’s winnings to 121,697 euro (£86,926).

Horton will be looking to consolidate his position at the top of the Order of Merit as he chases a record fourth successive John Jacobs Award.

With only three events left in the season, the race for a place in the Praia D’el Rey Rover European Cup against the Ladies European Tour is drawing to a conclusion. The top eight players in the Order of Merit qualify automatically for the team with the remaining two places being the choice of the captain.

Eddie Polland moved up into the last automatic place by finishing joint seventh last week, knocking Ross Metherell, a winner of two events this season, back to tenth place.

The format for the Ordina Legends in Golf will be the same as last year with Pro-Ams on Wednesday and Thursday. On Friday and Saturday 18 celebrities will be added to the field of 72 seniors for 36-hole stableford tournament. On Sunday the top 50 seniors and ties will decide the final outcome for 1999 Ordina Legends in Golf.
