Former England table-tennis player David Creamer is on course for a second European Seniors Tour victory after an opening 69, two under par, gave him a share of the first round lead in the Ordina Legends in Golf at Crayestein, Holland.
After seven years without a victory Creamer made his winning breakthrough last month when he captured the Energis Senior Masters at Wentworth. Buoyed by new-found confidence Creamer fired three birdies with just one dropped shot following a three putt on the 15th to join American Joe Carr at the top of the leaderboard.
“Winning at Wentworth was a dream come true,” said Creamer. “It has given me a big boost and now I know if I get into the same position again I can win. I don’t think there will be so much pressure.”
61-year-old Carr, who has yet to win on the Seniors Tour, took full advantage of his early start to post the target that stood up all day. Out in the first group Carr rolled in the putts for his 69. “I made three good pars on the fifth, sixth and seventh and after that felt it was going to be my day.
“I made a few good up and downs and then took my chances. The greens were fantastic without any spike marks and that certainly helped.”
Just a shot off the pace, however, is seasoned champion Tommy Horton, winner of the Order of Merit for the past four seasons. After only one win this year he is lying fifth in the Order of Merit but victory this week would take him back to the top. Following a lesson from coach John Jacobs a fortnight ago he feels he is back on the right track.
“It’s been frustrating,” said Horton. “I’ve been about two shots a round worse then I should be. Things have not been going my way. But I’ve felt a lot happier over the last two weeks. I know if I win another tournament the Order of Merit is in my sights and that is my target.”
Another of the season’s champions Ian Stanley of Australia also shot a 70 while American John Grace, winner of The Belfry PGA Seniors Championship a fortnight ago, remains well in contention after a round of 71 despite two dropped shots in his last three holes.
