European Seniors Tour Member Des Smyth finished in fifth place in the first Senior Major Championship of the season, the US PGA Seniors Championship at Aronimink Golf Club in Pennsylvania.

The 50 year old Irishman, making his debut in the event, had pushed himself into lead after his third round course record 65 but could not maintain the momentum in the final round, a closing 74 giving him a level par total of 280, four shots behind the eventual champion John Jacobs, who finished with 68 for 276.

Further down the final leaderboard, European Seniors Tour interest was maintained by Seiji Ebihara, who finished tied 24th on 285, and John Bland and John Chillas, who shared 28th place on 287.
