The European Seniors Tour makes its first appearance of the season in Scotland this year for the Charles Church Scottish Seniors Open at The Roxburghe, near Kelso, from August 27-29.
The Seniors Tour travels to some glorious destinations during the season but few are as significant as Scotland, where the sense of history and tradition of the game are overpowering.
This year marks the 12th time the Scottish Seniors Open has been played and the cream of senior golfers from Europe and overseas will once again make the journey north of the border.
England’s Carl Mason, who has won six times on the Seniors Tour since turning 50 last year, defending champion Terry Gale from Australia, and a powerful Scottish contingent led by Bill Longmuir, John Chillas and Mike Miller are just a few of the household names of the senior game who will compete.
“The Charles Church Scottish Seniors Open is a special tournament as it offers our members the opportunity to compete in the country where the origins of the game lie. It is a special week where our international line up of players eagerly look forward to playing,” said Andy Stubbs, Managing Director, European Seniors Tour.
Last year Gale won his third Seniors Tour title of the season when he closed with a two under par 70 to claim a two shot victory over England’s Nick Job and New Zealand’s Barry Vivian.
Indeed the Scottish Seniors Open boasts a list of past champions that reads like a Who’s Who of seniors golf with Neil Coles, Antonio Garrido, Tommy Horton (twice), Brian Huggett, David Huish, John Morgan, Noel Ratcliffe, Denis Durnian and David Oakley all winning the title.
The Roxburghe, the pride and joy of owner The Duke of Roxburghe, is set in 200 acres of spectacular countryside. The course was designed by Dave Thomas and opened in 1997.
“For spectators the natural contours of the course make for excellent viewing and we’re all looking forward to enjoying the high standard of golf amongst some of the most picturesque surroundings in the Scottish Borders,” said The Duke of Roxburghe.
This year will mark the fourth occasion that The Roxburghe has staged the Charles Church Scottish Seniors Open.
