Two-times Open Champion Greg Norman was the highest-placed European Seniors Tour Member after day one of The 2005 US Senior Open Championship at NCR Country Club, Kettering, Ohio.

The Australian – third at last week’s Senior British Open Championship, presented by Aberdeen Asset Management - lies four shots off the lead held by American Craig Stadler, whose seven under par 64 tied the competitive course record set by Don Bies and Miller Barber at the 1969 PGA Championship. That year the course was set up at 6,915 yards compared to the 7,000-yard, par-71 layout being used this week.

Des Smyth, who is hoping to secure his first Major after losing to Tom Watson in a play-off at Aberdeen on Sunday, is back on one under with his Irish compatriot Mark McNulty.

England’s Mark James is some way off the pace after starting with a one over par round of 72.
