José Rivero leads the European challenge at the 67th US Senior PGA Championship after the Spaniard produced a second round 69, two under par, to move within four shots of the halfway lead held by American Peter Jacobsen.
Currently second on the European Seniors Tour Order of Merit, Rivero battled admirably with the exacting Oak Tree Golf Club layout and carded three birdies, three bogeys and an eagle three to move on to a 36-hole aggregate of three under par 139.
As play drew to a conclusion in Oklahoma last night, the former Ryder Cup player sat in a share of fifth place alongside the powerful American trio of Dana Quigley, Loren Roberts and Tom Watson.
Meanwhile, England’s Gordon J Brand and Sam Torrance of Scotland, winner of last week’s Sharp Italian Seniors Open and Number One on the European Seniors Tour Order of Merit, both moved up 21 places after respective rounds of 70 moved them onto level par for the championship.
In all, nine European Seniors Tour members survived the halfway cut. Giuseppe Cali of Italy, Ireland’s Mark McNulty, Eduardo Romero of Argentina and Japan’s Katsuyoshi Tomori are all on three over, while American Pete Oakley and Ireland’s Des Smyth are a shot further back.
