Former European Tour player Glenn Ralph of England marked his seniors debut in style by producing one of the lowest scores of the day to qualify for The Senior British Open Championship, presented by Aberdeen Asset Management.
Ralph, who is making his first appearance on the European Seniors Tour after turning 50 earlier in the month, birdied the two closing holes for a round of four under par 68 on the Kintyre Course, at The Westin Turnberry Resort, Scotland.
It remained the equal lowest score all afternoon until American Chris Starkjohann, playing in the final group at the same course and a winner on the Nationwide Tour in the US, came home with a 67 that featured a brilliant front nine of five birdies and no dropped shots.
A total of 43 players made it through from the three qualifying rounds – at Kintyre, Dundonald and The Irvine Golf Club – and will now tee up alongside defending champion Tom Watson and other leading senior golfers at The Senior British Open Championship, presented by Aberdeen Asset Management, which starts Thursday on the famous Ailsa Course at Turnberry.
Among the successful group were five Scots – Craig Maltman of Eyemouth, Dundee’s Steve Martin, John McTear of Troon, local amateur Peter Lamb of Biggar Golf Club and Dunoon’s Russell Weir, a winner on the European Seniors Tour in 2001.
