Sam Torrance has confirmed he will play in the £150,000 Midas English Seniors Open, at St Mellion International Hotel Golf and Country Club, in Saltash, Cornwall, from August 17-19, to challenge Carl Mason’s efforts to win the tournament for a record-setting fourth time.

Scotland’s Torrance, Europe’s victorious Ryder Cup Captain in 2002, and other leading European Seniors Tour players, including Australia's Stewart Ginn, recent runner-up at The Senior Open Championship, presented by Aberdeen Asset Management, and Zimbabwe's Tony Johnstone, PGA Championship winner in 1992, will be seeking to deny England’s Mason an unprecedented feat never before achieved on the European Seniors Tour.

Peter Manby, Chief Executive Officer of Crown Golf - who own St Mellion and are hosting and promoting the tournament for a second year - said: "We're delighted that Sam Torrance is playing because he is a true British golfing hero. Who can forget him holing that famous put at the Belfry in 1985 to win the Ryder Cup – then his tears when he captained the team to victory 17 years later?

“I'm sure all golf fans in the South West who come to watch the Midas English Seniors Open will give him a very warm welcome. The event is attracting a very high-class field and I'm certain we will see some excellent, competitive golf played in a very friendly and enjoyable atmosphere, as usual."

Torrance, two-times winner of the European Seniors Tour Order of Merit, has this season won the Bendinat London Seniors Masters, as well as finish tied third in the Jersey Seniors Classic and tied fifth in the US Senior Open.

Yet he will have his work cut out to deny Mason at St Mellion, a place where he feels right at home. Not only is he the defending champion, but he also holds the course record – a 63 shot in 1995 at The Benson and Hedges International Open.

Mason has a staggering record in this event, having won at Hillside Golf Club in 2003, at Formby Hall Golf Club in 2004 and, after a year’s hiatus, at St Mellion last September.

That made him the first player in European Seniors Tour history to win the same event three times in a row – and he says he is very excited about going for a fourth.

Crown Golf are currently running a special two-for-one deal on pre-paid tickets for the event. They are available on the booking line 01579 352034 or via
