Five birdies in the first 11 holes took Eduardo Romero into the lead of the US Senior Open at The Broadmoor, Colorado Springs, as he closed in on a second Senior Major title.

Romero, who won the 2006 Jeld-Wen Tradition, started the third round two shots behind Fred Funk but took over the lead when the American bogeyed the 11th and 12th holes.

With Romero picking up five strokes to move to nine under and Funk on eight under par, only four players are in red figures with Tom Kite and John Cook completing the quartet.

Greg Norman, who finished joint third in The Open at Royal Birkdale, shot a two under par 68 to move to level par while Ian Woosnam shot a 71 to lie on three over 213.
