The European Seniors Tour arrives at the scene of some of European golf’s great moments this week when Woburn Golf Club plays host to the Travis Perkins plc Senior Masters.
Indeed, many of the Seniors Tour players in action over the immaculate Duke’s Course have played their part in Woburn’s rich golfing history, including Order of Merit leader Ian Woosnam, Gordon Brand Jnr, and Mark James.
Woosnam will have the fondest of Woburn memories to recall as he looks to secure the John Jacobs Trophy in this his rookie season on the Seniors Tour.
The Welshman tasted British Masters success in 1994 and will attempt to emulate his fellow former Ryder Cup Captain James by adding the Travis Perkins plc Senior Masters title to his European Tour success of 14 years ago.
Englishman James took the 1990 British Masters at Woburn before adding the Senior Masters title in 2005. That recent success will make James among the favourites to win the first prize from an impressive £250,000 total prize fund.
Brand Junior, meanwhile, heads to Woburn looking to tie up two counts of unfinished business that span 22 years.
The Scotsman finished second to his namesake Gordon J Brand after an unforgettable six-hole sudden-death play-off on his European Seniors Tour debut last week and would dearly love to improve upon that result over the Duke’s Course, the scene of his second-place finish to the one and only Seve Ballesteros in the 1986 British Masters.
Other players to look out for this week include Carl Mason who has played some of the finest golf of his career at Woburn, none more so than 12 months ago when he lifted the Travis Perkins plc Senior Masters title.
Joining Mason, Brand Junior, James and Woosnam among the favourites to write another victorious chapter in Buckinghamshire venue’s golfing history are last week’s champion Gordon J Brand, Costantino Rocca and Sam Torrance.
