Fred Funk picked up a couple of birdies through his first six holes to catch Greg Norman at the top of The Senior Open Championship presented by MasterCard leaderboard.
The American, who had set record low 18 and 36 hole scores a Sunningdale, raced out the blocks to pick up birdies on the par five first and then the sixth.
That took him to 11 under, the same as Norman – who was looking to win a first senior Major.
Defending champion Bruce Vaughan was not relinquishing his title without a fight. He birdied four of his first seven to go to ten under par.
Zimbabwe’s Denis Watson remained fourth on nine under as an exciting finish beckoned.
