Greg Norman is just a shot behind leader Fred Funk going into the final round of the US Senior Open at Crooked Stick.
The Australian, who led after three rounds of last week’s Senior Open Championship presented by MasterCard, carded a 68 to go to 11 under par.
Norman looked to be heading for another third round lead in a Major before Funk made a 20 foot birdie putt on the par four 16th as the two-time Open winner bogeyed the same hole.
“Freddie and I enjoy each other's company,” said Norman. “We kind of spur each other on quietly.”
Funk – beaten in a play-off at Sunningdale last Sunday after leading at halfway – also carded a four under round to lead Norman and Joey Sindelar by one.
“I'm fired up,” said Funk. “I feel like I'm playing well and I'm ready to go.”
“Number 16 was huge. Greg had all the momentum going with the eagle, and then I reversed it. That doesn't usually happen. I felt really good about it, although Greg probably didn't feel too good about it.”
Amateur Tim Jackson slipped to fourth after a 73, one ahead of Mark O’Meara.
Senior Tour Member Eduardo Romero is still in the frame after a 70 took him to three under, with Bernhard Langer (73) one over and Ian Woosnam (74) and Mark McNulty (72) both two over.
