Sam Torrance revealed a visit to his father Bob had inspired his improved form at The Senior Open Championship presented by MasterCard.

The Scot moved into contention with a two under par 69 at Carnoustie to lie two shots behind first round co-leaders Jay Don Blake, Bernhard Langer and Carl Mason.

That came despite a run of six Senior Tour events without a top ten finish for the former Ryder Cup Captain, who has been almost an ever-present in the upper part of the leaderboard in recent years on The Senior Tour.

"I wasn't in great shape with my swing and I couldn't see my dad last week at The Open, and I had a couple of chats with him and he gave me a few things to work on," said Torrance.

"I played in the Pro Am Tuesday and I left here at 6:30am and drove to get to Largs at half past eight, quarter to nine and we stayed there till dark, ten o'clock, and back up yesterday morning for a few hours and came here and did some more work. Fantastic; he's given me a great swing thought.

"He's a wonderful coach. He's got a wonderful eye, my father - he sees things that nobody else sees."

Torrance senior certainly knows how to get a player's game together for the Championship Course at Carnoustie - he coached Padraig Harrington when the Irishman landed his first Major Championship at the same venue in 2007.

His son was fifth in this event last year at Sunningdale, and is delighted to be in contention once again.

"A fantastic day to play golf on such a fantastic golf course," said Torrance. "It's a delight to play here, it really is special but sometimes it can be impossible, but it was very playable and manageable and I played well."
