Mark James made a superb start to the ISPS Handa PGA Seniors Championship, posting four birdies in his opening nine holes at De Vere Slaley Hall in Northumberland, England.

The 1999 Ryder Cup Captain, who finished  joint runner up in last week’s Benahavis Senior Masters, birdied the 11th, 13th, 14th and 17th holes after starting on the tenth tee as he searches for his first European Senior Tour victory since 2009.

Sweden’s Anders Forsbrand  was three under par after his opening nine holes, while Australian Dave Merriman also reached the turn with three birdies on his card.

Scotland’s Gordon Brand Junior, who has finished in the top five on each of his four previous visits to De Vere Slaley Hall, was a further shot back on two under par.
