Barry Lane breathed life into his bid for a hat-trick of SSE Scottish Senior Open titles with a superb second round 65 at Fairmont St Andrews.

The Englishman began the day eight shots off the pace set by Marc Farry and Anders Forsbrand after starting his opening round with a double bogey bin adverse conditions on Friday en route to a two over par 74.

That came after his clubs were lost in transit on Wednesday, eventually turning up  at 4pm on Thursday, meaning the former Ryder Cup player had limited chance to practise.

He put those travails behind him with a super recovery, improving on his first round score by nine shots, and is seven shots behind Forsbrand going into the final round as he tries to win a third consecutive title.

“The long game is fine but I putted very poorly yesterday,” he said. “I played OK and didn’t hit it that close but I putted very poorly, which was a shame because the greens are great.

“I’ve been putting well – I putted beautifully at Turnberry. But I never had enough time to practise. When they did arrive I played six holes in the Pro-Am so I didn’t have chance to get ready. I worked on a bit last night when I got finished and there was nothing wrong – I just hadn’t practised on the greens and kept leaving everything short.

“I just hope they don’t get too far away."

Lane moved to five under par for the tournament but his fine round was eclipsed by compatriot Philip Golding who seized the course record from him with a flawless eight under par 64 to move to within four shots of the lead.

After making his European Senior Tour debut in The Senior Open Championship Presented by Rolex, former Open de France winner Golding is hoping to make an immediate impact in his second event.

"I got the putter working today,” said the 50 year old.  “I’ve been using the line on the ball and in was getting a bit too careful and today I was completely free and it freed my putter up. It was nice to make eight birdies – I wasn’t sure how much under I was. I didn’t look at the card or the scoreboard to make sure I didn’t get ahead of myself.

“I played with Paul Wesselingh yesterday who finished runner up in his first event then won his third, so it’s nice to be in contention myself so early on. Yesterday after a 72 I thought I was too far back being six shots off the pace on day one but in golf you never know what is going to happen.  A 64 today is really good and I’m happy with that. “
