The Senior Tour Member goes into the final round at Bellerive Golf Club five shots behind leader Kenny Perry after another steady display in Missouri.
Perry carded a 68to reach ten under par and lead compatriot Jay Haas by two shots.
Senior, a one-time Senior Tour winner, mixed four birdies and two bogeys to advance to five under par.
England’s defending champion Roger Chapman carded a best-of-the-day 66 to climb to one under for the tournament, the same score as five-time Open Champion Tom Watson.
German Bernhard Langer and Zimbabwe’s Mark McNulty are amongst those a shot further back on level par.
