Miguel Angel Martin launched himself into contention to capture his debut Senior Tour title with a round of 67 on the second day of the Berenberg Masters.

The Spaniard won three times during a highly successful career on The European Tour, but has yet to enter the winners’ enclosure since turning 50 in May 2012.

However, Martin has a great opportunity to break his duck after moving to five under par courtesy of a flawless performance at Golf- und Land-Club Köln, on the outskirts of the German city Cologne.

Martin’s birdies came in rapid bursts, with two successive gains from the fourth hole and later from the tenth, before a closing birdie moved the Madrid resident to within one shot of Nick Job and Steen Tinning going into the final day of the €400,000 event.

Martin said: “I drove the ball very well today – I think I only missed two fairways all day, and only by a few metres both times. I also hit my irons very well – all of my birdie putts were from ten feet or less. So it was a good day, and it’s nice to see my name near the top of the leaderboard for a change.

“I like this course, because you have to think a little and you have to be able to shape the ball both ways, which suits my game. And the weather here also suits me – I like to feel the sun on my face when I’m playing, because that’s what I’m used to back home in Spain. So I’m really enjoying myself out on the course this week.”
