Woburn Golf Club might this week be hosting some of the more seasoned characters in golf at the Travis Perkins plc Senior Masters, but there were a handful of smiling, fresh-faced school children on site on Pro-Am day to receive a special gift courtesy of the title sponsors.

In what has become an annual initiative at this week’s tournament, Lincroft School, from the village of Oakley in Bedfordshire, were handed the keys to a brand new £40,000 Variety Club Sunshine coach to be used to transport children to a number of activities across the county.

The scheme is funded by Travis Perkins plc and organised through the Variety Club Golf Society.

Former England cricket Captain Mike Gatting was on hand to present the school’s Executive Head Teacher Michael Lavelle with the keys to the coach, with Senior Tour Members Steen Tinning, Gordon Brand Jr and Andrew Murray watching on.

Mr Lavelle said: “Largely it will enable all students, including those in our provision for autism, to get where they need to across Bedfordshire in comfort.

“We’ve got 3,000 students across four sites and so we need a lot of transport to make things happen for them so it’s really helpful.

“It is a fantastic gesture from Travis Perkins. This is the second bus that we have had from them and it has just transformed the opportunities available to our children.”

Geoff Cooper, Travis Perkins plc Group Chief Executive, added: “After a year when we had such a success with everyone getting involved in the Olympics I think it’s really important we continue that momentum.

“Investing in this kind of thing, supporting young people, is just one of the most worthwhile investments you could possibly make.”

The ultimate sacrifice, though, was made by four children from Lincroft School, who donned their new school uniforms to attend the presentation – despite still being on summer holidays.

“This is our crack press team!” Mr Lavelle quipped.
