More than 23,000 spectators were present to watch Montgomerie, the seven-time European Tour Number One, enter a new chapter of his glorious career in swashbuckling style at the Buckinghamshire venue.
The Scot stormed to a six-shot victory over Spaniard Martin Angel Martin and eventual 2013 John Jacobs Trophy winner Paul Wesselingh of England to add his name to the impressive list of Travis Perkins Masters champions.
Former Ryder Cup Captain Mark James (2005), record Senior Tour title winner Carl Mason (2006 and 2007) and former Ryder Cup player Des Smyth (2010 and 2012) have all etched their names on the famous trophy and this year an all-star cast will be hoping to steal Montgomerie’s crown.
The 2014 edition will mark the seventh consecutive year of Travis Perkins plc’s sponsorship of one of the best-attended events on the Senior Tour schedule, while the leading builders’ merchant also sponsored the Wentworth Senior Masters from 2002-2005.
Andy Stubbs, Managing Director of the Senior Tour, said: “We cannot thank Travis Perkins plc enough for their continued support for, and commitment to, this great event which truly captures the imagination of the public.
“Colin Montgomerie’s victory last year, in front of record crowds, really epitomised what this event is all about, great fans, great golf and great champions.
“The names that have been etched on the Travis Perkins Masters trophy prove just how big an event this is for the players and we are expecting another extremely strong field this year, full of former European Tour champions and former Ryder Cup stars.”
Jason O’Malley, General Manager of Woburn Golf Club said: “On behalf of Woburn I would like to welcome the Senior Tour back to the club and thank Travis Perkins plc for their continued support. We look forward to another fantastic event and hopefully to Colin Montgomerie defending his title in style.”
John Carter, Chief Executive of Travis Perkins plc, said: “We are extremely proud of our long-running association with the Tour and we are looking forward to another successful Travis Perkins Masters this year.
“Last year’s event was another thoroughly enjoyable week for all concerned and it was a pleasure to see a legend of the game like Colin Montgomerie win in such stunning fashion.
“On top of that, we had record crowds at Woburn which just demonstrates the growing popularity of the event and as title sponsors, we are delighted with the tournament’s continuing success.”
