Ian Woosnam enjoyed the sun on his back at The Celtic Manor Resort in Newport today by forcing his way into contention for the SSE Enterprise Wales Senior Open today.
Starting the second round on level par, three behind joint leaders Miguel Angel Martin of Spain and Ireland’s Denis O’Sullivan, the Welshman kept thehome crowd entertained by picking up two shots by the turn.
Woosnam, who recently won his first Senior title in the United States, birdied all three par fives on the front nine on the Roman Road course – offset by a bogey at the sixth – to turn in 35 and two under par for the tournament.
At that stage, Woosnam found himself just one off the pace set by O’Sullivan, aiming to become only the second champion at the age of 67. O’Sullivan was still three under after his first seven holes of the second round.
O’Sullivan was sharing the lead now with England’s Paul Wesselingh, who followed a birdie two at the seventh with an even more spectacular two – a full blooded eight iron from 158 yards – which sent him soaring to three under for the tournament.
It was a day of dramatic shot making as Argentine Cesar Monasterio aced the seventh with a seven iron from 144yards. That one stroke propelled him to joint leader – but he promptly drove out of bounds with his next tee shot and ran up a quadruple bogey eight.
