With the SSE Enterprise Wales Senior Open teeing-off in just a couple of months’ time, European Senior Tour pair Mark Mouland and Paul Mayo were joined by Rhys Davies at Merthyr Tydfil Fire Station, which had been transformed into a nine-hole urban golf course.
Fifty youngsters and their families were welcomed to the fire station to take part in a partnership event organised alongside Valleys Golf Enterprise for an afternoon of golf and an awareness campaign by South Wales Fire and Rescue to demonstrate to children the dangers and damage that grass fires can cause to the area, including many golf clubs.
Mouland, Mayo and Davies captained and coached the young golfers who took on the challenges of hitting golf balls through a ring of fire, over a SWFRS 4x4 and into the tower windows.
The ninth hole saw Bernie, the Service’s grass fire mascot, get lifted onto an aerial platform as the players’ final target.
Tim Davies, Station Commander for Merthyr and Treharris, said: “It was a pleasure to welcome the Valleys Golf team and their players to the station for this event.
“There was a fantastic turnout and it was great to see how engaged the young people were with the course, but also our deliberate grass fire campaign message.”
James Pontin, Director at Valleys Golf Enterprise, said: “The Fire Golf event was a fantastic event with all the VGE children thoroughly enjoying themselves.
“The day proved that it’s possible to marry the very important educational and safety messages with having fun playing golf.
“The firefighters were great with the VGE children and the creative use of their equipment to set up the golf course was exceptional.
“Along with the Pros Challenge, the day was inspirational for the VGE children and we can’t thank South Wales Fire and Rescue Service and the European Senior Tour enough.”
European Senior Tour Managing Director Andy Stubbs added: “We are delighted to have been involved in this important community initiative with South Wales Fire and Rescue Service in conjunction with Valleys Golf Enterprise in staging a unique Urban Fire Golf event at Merthyr Fire Station.
“We hope to see some of the Valleys Golf youngsters watching Mark and Paul in action at Celtic Manor Resort when we return to South Wales in June.”
Mouland and Mayo will be competing in the SSE Enterprise Wales Senior Open which takes place at the Celtic Manor Resort, Newport, from June 3-5.
