Former Ryder Cup player Barry Lane fired a five under par round of 65 to take a share of fourth place after the first round of the U.S. Senior Open.

The Englishman started his round with three birdies on the first five holes and made two further gains on the back nine, including a birdie on the ninth hole, his 18th.

He sits in fourth place with American trio Paul Goydos, Tom Lehman and Kenny Perry, three shots behind leader Kirk Triplett who carded a stunning first round 62 for an eight under par total.

"I played nice, actually. I got off to a pretty good start on the back nine," said Lane. "All in all, I think I missed three fairways and two greens, so I was pretty solid.

"I knew before I went out there were a few 65s, but there's a long way to go. I was just trying to get in a nice score. I'm not a board watcher, so I didn't see Kirk's score. If you get it in the right spots on this course, you can hole some putts."

One stroke behind Lane in a share of 13th place are Senior Tour trio Paul Broadhurst, Miguel Angel Jiménez and Bernhard Langer as they fired opening rounds of 66

Jiménez narrowly missed out on a maiden Senior Major Championship at last year's event as he finished runner-up, one stroke behind Gene Sauers. 2016 Senior Open Championship Presented by Rolex winner Paul Broadhurst, who birdied the 18th for a three under par round of 67, and nine-time Senior Major Champion Bernhard Langer.

Finishing his round is a share of 22nd is 2012 U.S. Senior Open Champion Roger Chapman. That same year, the Englishman became the first European in history to hold both the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship and U.S. Senior Open titles at the same time after his victory at Indianwood Golf and Country Club.
