The Staysure Tour heads to PGA Catalunya Resort, in Spain, this week for the European Tour Destinations Senior Classic. We take a look at five things you should know before the tournament gets underway from July 12-14.
Job equals appearance record
Nick Job will equal Denis O’Sullivan’s Staysure Tour appearance record when he tees up his 306th start on the over-50s circuit this week.
The Englishman made his Staysure Tour debut in 1999 at the Energis Senior Masters and has registered five wins on the tour over the course of the past two decades.
Despite celebrating his 70th birthday later this month, Job remains impressively competitive, shooting his age in the opening round of the Senior Open Hauts de France by Jean van de Velde last month.
Levet returns to the scene of his Spanish conquest
Thomas Levet will be looking to draw inspiration from his 2009 Open de España victory at PGA Catalunya Resort when he returns to the acclaimed Spanish venue this week.
A six-time winner on the European Tour, the tournament will mark the Frenchman’s fourth appearance on the over-50s circuit following his debut at the Farmfoods European Senior Masters last October.
A decade later, can the Frenchman replicate his heroics at the Girona venue and claim his first Staysure Tour title?
Same tournament, different country
The European Tour Destinations Senior Classic returns for its third edition this week after visits to Finland’s Linna Golf Club in 2017 and to Lighthouse Golf and Spa Resort, Bulgaria, in 2018.
This year, PGA Catalunya Resort, a three-time host of the Open de España and venue for nine consecutive editions of European Tour Qualifying School Final Stage until 2016, will take on hosting duties, with the venue marking the twentieth anniversary of its celebrated Stadium Course.
Defending champion Magnus P Atlevi, who claimed a three-shot win over Stephen Dodd in Bulgaria last year, will join a host of Ryder Cup players in the field, as he goes in search of his third Staysure Tour title.
Remesy on a roll
Jean-François Remesy will be looking to continue his run of fantastic form this week. The Frenchman, who is one of only 11 players to triumph on the European Challenge Tour, European Tour and Staysure Tour, already has three top-three finishes to his name this season, including a win at the Farmfoods European Legends Links Championship.
After a second place finish at last week’s Swiss Seniors Open, can he go one better this week in Spain and clinch his third Staysure Tour title?
Cóceres bidding to go back-to-back
José Cóceres will be bidding to become the first player since Peter Fowler in 2015 to win back-to-back Staysure Tour titles when he tees it up at PGA Catalunya Resort this week.
The Argentinian, who clinched his first title on the over-50s circuit at the Swiss Seniors Open last week, sits atop the Staysure Tour Rankings after a fantastic start to the season, which has included two further top-four finishes at the Jordan Mixed Open Presented by Ayla and Senior Italian Open.
Can he cement his place at the top with a strong result this week?
