Day one digest: WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play

Everything you need to know from the opening day at Austin Country Club.

Robert MacIntyre

Rozner rocked Bryson, Poulter did what Poulter does, Bob produced the big birds and Spieth, well, you need to see it to believe it.

Here is everything you need to know from Wednesday at the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play.

Don't call it an upset

Antoine Rozner's star has been on the rise for a while now but on Wednesday in Texas it outshone the brightest in the game. 64 of the world's 69 top players teed it up but it was the Frenchman who stole the headlines as he took down U.S. Open champion Bryson DeChambeau two up. His win in Qatar that got him into this event was his second in six starts but to most he was still the under dog against the big-hitting World Number Five. So, did he enjoy the occasion? Yes. But was he shocked at his victory? "I think in match play everyone is on the same level, so no, I don't think it's an upset," he said. "Obviously he's a heck of a player. He hit the ball so far. I think it's just a round of golf. It doesn't matter who you are. In one round you can beat anyone."

The Postman delivers a big win

There are few more feared match play competitors than Ian Poulter but there are also few more talented players than Rory McIlroy. So when the two Ryder Cup stalwarts were drawn to play in the very first match of the week the golfing world was watching. In the end, it was the guile of Poulter that prevailed 6&5 as the 2010 champion outdid the 2015 winner. "I played well and obviously the scoreline's pretty flattering to be honest with you," he said. "But I kept Rory under pressure and I made it difficult for him.  He hit a couple of loose shots but putting the ball in pretty tight and taking control of a match, I had to do that against Rory."

Big birds send Bob flying

Robert MacIntyre went out in the final group of the day as he made his WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play debut and after 12 holes he was one down to the tenacious Kevin Na. Nerves? None of it. The Scot chips for an eagle on the 13th, wins the next and then holes a bunker shot for another eagle on the 16th. "It was one of the most enjoyable rounds of golf I've ever had in my life, just with the way I played, the way I won it," he said after a 2& 1 win. "Everything was great today. It was just one of them days." Next up - Dustin Johnson.

Not all pars are equal

Driving the green at the par four 13th is not that rare a feat at Austin Country Club. But most players don't drive the 15th green from the 13th tee. Well that's what Jordan Spieth did and, of course, he made his par. You don't see many like that.

Sergio has a rocky time

If there was a par to possibly match Jordan's, it was this from Sergio Garcia. Up and down from the rough, the sand, the trees - that often happens. But up and down from the rocks? take a bow, Sergio.

Victor channels his inner Miguel

There are few things better than a driver off the deck. One of them is a driver off the deck followed by a Miguel Ángel Jiménez celebration. Enjoy it Victor Perez.
