Last year’s tournament was one of two back-to-back events hosted by the Catalan venue, in addition to the Challenge Costa Brava, which was won by New Zealand’s Daniel Hillier, who picked up his maiden Challenge Tour title in his first full season in Europe, following Frenchman Julien Brun's victory in the Empordà Challenge.

Empordà Golf is the former host venue of DP World Tour events and the European Tour Qualifying School, and the Empordà Challenge will again be played on the Links Course, which underwent substantial renovation work during 2020.

Jamie Hodges, Head of Challenge Tour, said: “We are excited to return to Empordà Golf in 2022, a venue we are extremely grateful to for hosting two events at short notice last year.

“The quality of the golf course exceeded our expectations and we were well-looked after by their attentive on-site team. We greatly value the relationship with Emporda Golf and it is incredibly pleasing that Emilio Cuatrecasas and his team were so keen to host an event on the 2022 Road to Mallorca.”

Emilio Cuatrecasas, President of Empordà Golf, said: “I think last year’s event was a great experience for the whole team, and we showed the work that is being made on the course is going in the right direction. We have made important changes in recent years and last year's experience shows us that we can aspire to have the best golfers in Empordà. We are delighted to welcome back the Challenge Tour and look forward to a magnificent week with some of the best young players in Europe.”

Jaime Salaverri, President of the Professionals Committee of the Royal Spanish Golf Federation said: “Spanish golf had a fantastic year on the Challenge Tour with four victories by our players; two by Santiago Tarrío, one by Alfredo García-Heredia and one by Ángel Hidalgo, who was able to take advantage of his invitation and win in Germany. The level of competition rises every year, but the Spaniards are continue to fight for a place on the DP World Tour.”

Javier Gervás, Promoter and General Manager of JGolf, said: “Empordà Golf showed last year that they have desire, enthusiasm and a great quality course to host major professional tournaments. The experience was fantastic, especially for professionals who excel on this type of course. It will undoubtedly be a great week of golf and maximum excitement where spectators can enjoy watching the future stars of world golf.”

The Empordà Challenge will be played from June 9-12 at Empordà Golf with the support of the Royal Spanish Golf Federation, the Patronat de Turisme de la Costa Brava de Girona, Kyocera and the official hotel will be the recently renamed Hotel Terraverda, a name that represents the two large fields that surround the hotel and its commitment to sustainability
