Campillo moves clear in Qatar

Jorge Campillo produced a stunning run of scoring to turn in 32 and open up a three shot lead on day three of the 2020 Commercial Bank Qatar Masters.

The Spaniard started the day in a share of the lead but he was passed at the top of the leaderboard as he began his round with four pars.

He then made four birdies in five holes to leap to 14 under and lead the way from countryman and clubhouse leader Pablo Larrazábal - who carded a stunning 63 - Swede Alexander Björk, Belgian Thomas Detry, Finn Kalle Samooja and Dane Jeff Winther.

Last season Campillo claimed his maiden European Tour win at the 229th time of asking at the Trophée Hassan II as he secured five top fives in six starts, but he has had just one top ten since.

Detry got off to a flying start, birdieing the first, making an eagle on the par five second and adding another gain on the third.

He spun his approach to ten feet at the fifth and when he took advantage of the par five sixth, he had a share of the lead.

When the later groups got under way, Winther was the man to make a fast start, birdieing his first three holes to share the lead.

Detry hit the front on his own with an approach to four feet at the tenth but Winther holed a 30 footer on the fifth to share the lead.

Campillo had started the day with those four pars but he holed from eight feet at the fifth to get back into a tie.

A 15 footer on the seventh put Winther out in front but Campillo laid up and put his third to three feet at the par five sixth to get to 12 under.

Winther found the water on the seventh to surrender a bogey and when Campillo made a third gain in a row on the seventh after a lovely approach, he led by two.

Björk had birdied the fifth and he put his approach to tap-in range at the seventh to join the group at 11 under.

Larrazábal made two birdies and two bogeys on the front nine and while an eagle on the second saw him turn in 34, he was still a long way back.

The Alfred Dunhill Championship winner caught fire on the back nine, however, making a second eagle of the day on the 13th to go with birdies on the 12th, 14th, 15th and 17th to join the group in second.

He got up and down for par on the last to come home in 29 and set the target at 11 under, where he was joined by Samooja.

The 32-year-old made four birdies in a row from the second and added two more on the eighth and 14th.

He was soon three back, however, as Campillo holed a 40 footer on the ninth to make it four birdies in five holes.

English pair Marcus Armitage and Andy Sullivan, Scottish duo David Drysdale and Scott Jamieson, India's S.S.P. Chawrasia and Dane Benjamin Poke were at ten under.
