Day three digest: Scandinavian Invitation

Low scores, fightbacks galore and some local wildlife stole the headlines on day three of the Scandinavian Invitation.

EVR an MVP

Erik van Rooyen has been threatening to win a European Tour event ever since he gained his card via the European Challenge Tour in 2017. An impressive rookie campaign brought five top tens and he already has that many again in 2019, with two second place finishes. He has brought friend and college team-mate Alex Gaugert onto the bag this season and after a 64 gave him a one shot lead, the duo could seal that elusive first win on Sunday. "A caddie for me isn't just a guy that carries the bag and then goes and has a few beers after the round," said Van Rooyen. "We've known each other for a very long time so he knows me really well. He knows when to kick me in the butt when I need it and tell me not to be a child on the golf course and he also knows when to say, 'dude, really well done'. We're a great team."

Fitz fights back

Much like Van Rooyen, Matthew Fitzpatrick has impressed right from his rookie campaign on the European Tour, although the Englishman has managed to seal five wins along the way. He made an eagle on the 18th to get within one on Van Rooyen and win number six would make it five victorious seasons in a row. “I always want to win," he said. "For me, after winning three years in a row, it became a bit of a goal, whether it is one win or as many wins in a year, if I win now or later this year it will be winning five years in a row, so that is a goal for me to keep that up. I will be going out there tomorrow trying to win.”

Stenson delights the home fans

After a stunning 62 on Friday it looked like the fairytale victory was on and that Sweden's favourite golfing son would at last claim a European Tour victory in his homeland. An opening double bogey was not what anyone - least Henrik Stenson - had in mind but a monster putt on the third got the biggest cheer of the day and the wheels back on the wagon. The 2016 Open Champion finished with a 69 and is just three off the lead. The dream is alive.

The Hills are alive with Levy

Another man heading into Sunday three shots off the lead is Alexander Levy. With his swashbucking style and that remarkable recoil he has won an army of fans in claiming his five European Tour wins but the Frenchman has been out of sorts in 2019. He has made just three cuts this season but six birdies in a row from the seventh on Saturday catapulted him up the leaderboard and if a Swede cannot lift the trophy, there will be few more popular winners than Alex.
