European Tour quintet qualify for US Open

The European Tour’s contingent at the US Open Championship has been strengthened after Miguel Angel Jiménez, Robert Karlsson, Matrin Kaymer, Ian Poulter and Oliver Wilson all gained exemption for next month’s tournament.

Jiménez and Wilson qualified for the second Major of the season at Torrey Pines Golf Club, La Jolla, California, from June 12-15, because they are the top two in The European Tour Order of Merit following the BMW PGA Championship.

Karlsson, Kaymer and Poulter gained their exemption as they are Official World Ranking Top 50 after the cut off point which came at the end of the BMW PGA Championship, which Jiménez won.

As a result, Jiménez, Karlsson, Kaymer and Wilson will now not have to participate at US Open Championship qualifying at Walton Heath, England, on June 2.

The five join defending champion Angel Cabrera, of Argentina, who was one of 22 European Tour Members among the initial 58 exempt golfers, along with other past champions Michael Campbell (2005), Ernie Els (1994 and 1997), and Retief Goosen (2001 and 2004).

The record number of European Tour qualifiers for the US Open Championship was 39 in 2006, when Geoff Ogilvy won the title at Winged Foot Golf Club.
