Peter Gustafsson and Simon Wakefield, the top two players at The European Tour Qualifying School last November, held onto their positions after the first re-rank of the season after making impressive starts to their 2005 campaigns.
Gustafsson, who lost out in a play-off to fellow Swede Peter Hanson in the Jazztel Open de España en Andalucia over the same San Roque Course where he won the Qualifying School six months earlier, leads the way in Category 11 with earnings of €209,237 after the first re-rank of the season, which took place at the conclusion of the BMW Asian Open.
Wakefield has also enjoyed a fine start to the year, the highlight coming on Monday when he finished runner-up behind Ernie Els in the BMW Asian Open in Shanghai. That took his season’’s earnings to €171,042.
Whilst the top two remain the same, the next four players after the re-rank have all made significant gains. Ian Garbutt has picked up €109,643 to climb from 23 to third but the biggest move has come from another Englishman, Neil Cheetham, who has moved from 31st to fourth.
Cheetham memorably eagled the 108th and final hole of the Qualifying School examination to take the 31st card, and went onto take second place in his first event of the 2005 season at the dunhill championship in South Africa. Cheetham has earned €108,772 this season
Stuart Little and Andrew McLardy have also made big moves, advancing from 28th to fifth and 27th to sixth respectively.
