Harrington fires 64 at The Tour Championship

Padraig Harrington headed the European Tour Members challenge at The Tour Championship presented by Coca-Cola after firing a seven under par 63 in the climax to the FedEx-Cup series on the US PGA Tour.

The Irishman and Open Champion trails South Africa’s Tim Clark, who shot 62, by just one stroke, having recorded eight birdies and one bogey on his opening round at  the rain-softened East Lake Course, in Atlanta, Georgia, where only seven of 30 players in the elite field are in with a realistic chance of winning the FedEx-Cup and its $10m bonus.

Rain flooded the course with only 10 players in the clubhouse after finishing. Play was suspended, meaning European Tour Members – South Africa’s Ernie Els, Spain’s Sergio Garcia, England’s Justin Rose, Fiji’s Vijay Singh and Australia’s Adam Scott, must all return at 9am local time to complete their opening round. Tiger Woods was four under par through 11 holes.
