Miguel Angel Jiménez will follow in the footsteps of Bernhard Langer when, as promoter, he will also headline the field in his own tournament – the Valle Romano Open de Andalucia.
Langer Sport Marketing are behind the Mercedes-Benz Championship in Cologne in September while Jiménez’s company, Golf Acción, in association with GFC Golf and Business, the company of fellow Spaniard Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño, will promote the Spanish tournament at Aloha Golf Club from May 10-13.
Jiménez, a member of Langer’s winning Ryder Cup Team at Oakland Hills in 2004, is also an Honorary Member of the Aloha Golf Club and one of his main backers, Junta de Andalucia, have signed as principal sponsor in a three year deal which sees the total prize fund for the 2007 tournament set at €1 million.
“This is my first tournament as a promoter and I’m thrilled to play in the event as well,” said Jiménez. “Andalucia has sponsored me for many years and I have had the opportunity to play all around the world. This is a way of giving back for all the support they have given me.”
A measure of Jiménez’s commitment to his event is the fact that, even if he qualifies to play in The Players Championship at Sawgrass on the US PGA Tour in the same week, he will not fly across the Atlantic, instead preferring to tee up at Aloha Golf Club.
“I have committed myself to play in the Valle Romano Open de Andalucia and fulfil my dream of competing in a tournament organised by my company,” he said.
The Valle Romano Open de Andalucia is one of five events in Spain on The 2007 European Tour International Schedule, joining the Open de España, the Open de Madrid, the Mallorca Classic and the Volvo Masters.
