Johnstone teams up with MS charity

Multiple Sclerosis sufferer Tony Johnstone helped raise more than £5,500 when he teamed up with the MS Society at The Senior Open Championship presented by MasterCard.

The 53 year old was diagnosed with the illness in 2004 and found it very debilitating but after joining a clinical trial and responding well to treatment he was soon playing golf again. Johnstone helped promote fundraising activities at Sunningdale Golf Club during the Senior Open Championship, where the MS Society was the nominated charity and was supported by The Tour Players’ Foundation and MasterCard.

Johnstone, a Senior Tour player and long-time member of Sunningdale, will also host the Tony Johnstone MS Society Pro-Am on September 7 2009, for which tickets were sold each day.

A ‘Hit the Green’ competition was staged during the Pro-Am on the Tuesday, making almost £1,000, and in the tented village members of the public had golf lessons, used a golf simulator and took part in various challenges in return for a donation. Sales of Senior Open Championship key rings also contributed to the £5,621 raised.

Johnstone finished tied for 13th in The Senior Open Championship and his efforts and continued support – particularly turning up every day to do the daily draw – were greatly appreciated. Thanks must also go to MasterCard and the volunteers who worked tirelessly to promote the charity throughout the week.

“The MS Society has been wonderful to me and it is a pleasure to help them with their fundraising,” said Johnstone

MS is a debilitating condition which affects the central nervous system and the MS Society is the UK's largest charity for people affected by it.
