The European Tour is delighted to announce that Ulf Laurin has been accorded the title of Life Vice President of the Tour in recognition to his contribution to tournament golf in Sweden.
Laurin was a former Chief Executive of PLM and instigated the PLM Open on the Swedish Tour in 1983. He had the foresight to invite players such as Tommy Horton and Brian Huggett to compete in those early years and the event subsequently took its place on The European Tour in 1986 when it was played at Falsterbo GK.
Five years later Laurin was instrumental in merging the PLM Open with the Scandinavian Enterprise Open to form the Scandinavian Masters.
In 1992 Laurin became Chairman of the Swedish Golf Federation and the Scandinavian Masters and remained at the helm until his retirement in 2001. He was also a member of the board at Volvo, The European Tour’’s principal sponsor since 1988, when Volvo took over sponsorship of the Scandinavian Masters in 1995.
Ken Schofield, Executive Director of The European Tour, presented Laurin with an Asprey Salver during the Scandic Carlsberg Scandinavian Masters to commemorate his acceptance of becoming Life Vice President of the Tour. “Ulf is very much valued as a friend to The European Tour and we congratulate him on all his efforts in promoting tournament golf in Sweden,” said Schofield.
Laurin commented: “I am very honoured to receive this gift of an Asprey Salver and the title of Life Vice President. I would like to thank The European Tour for helping in the creation of the Scandinavian Masters – the success of this tournament has put Sweden firmly on the golfing map.”
