Paul McGinley is to return to The Belfry and the scene of his finest hour when he plays in The Quinn Direct British Masters in September.
McGinley’s name is synonymous with The Belfry, having holed the winning putt on the 18th green of The Brabazon course in the 2002 Ryder Cup, creating iconic celebratory images that were broadcast around the world.
McGinley’s consistent performance at Carnoustie at The 136th Open Championship secured him an impressive 19th place finish, and the Irishman is hoping to build upon that showing over the rest of the season, and especially at The Quinn Direct British Masters, where his challengers for the coveted title and £1.8million prize fund will include fellow British hope Lee Westwood.
“I’m now really looking forward to another UK tournament,” said McGinley, currently 77th in The European Tour Order of Merit. “The atmosphere at The Belfry is always fantastic and the course a challenge. I aim to improve on my current position and rise in the rankings.”
The Quinn Direct British Masters in September will see the return of top level European Tour golf to The Belfry, along with many of its biggest stars.
Andrew ‘Chubby’ Chandler, Managing Director of tournament promoters International Sports Management, said: “It is always exciting when another top British player confirms his spot at The Belfry. The stage is set for a fantastic battle and there are plenty more announcements from the world’s top golfers still to come yet.”
The prestigious tournament will be played from September 20-23 2007, including a Pro-Am on September 19.
