One Minute's Silence to be Observed at Qatar Masters

The European Tour will observe one minute's silence during the third round of the Qatar Masters at Doha Golf Club on Saturday as a mark of respect for the victims of the Madrid bombings on Thursday. Klaxons will be used to mark the start and finish of the one minute period. Black ribbons will be available on the first tee for any player or caddie wishing to wear one.

A total of seven Spaniards are playing in the Qatar Masters and two of The European Tour's champions, Ignacio Garrido and Miguel Angel Jimenez, were profoundly affected by the news from their homeland, while the Spanish flag flew at half-mast on the 18th green grandstand at Doha Golf Club.

Garrido, from Madrid, said: "It is very sad and of course it is only right to have a minute's silence. Any mark of respect is good but nothing can help those poor people now."

Jimenez commented: "I watched television last night and saw the pictures from Madrid. Golf is not important right now."
