Seve Ballesteros stable after third operation

Severiano Ballesteros is in a stable condition at La Paz Hospital in Madrid following a third operation to remove the remnants of a tumour.

A statement from the hospital said: “The patient Mr. Severiano Ballesteros has been subjected to a new surgery that has ended at 17:00 p.m. today (Friday) with no complications occurred during the same.

“In that operation the targets originally planned have been achieved and have eliminated the edema and the remnants of the tumour.

“The patient entered the operating room of Neurosurgery Service at 08:30 a.m. for the preparation and process anaesthetic and the intervention began at 10:30 a.m. It has involved three neurosurgeons, two anaesthesiologists and three nurses.

“The patient is stable haemodynamically and is currently controlled in the Intensive Care Unit.”

Severiano Ballesteros underwent the third operation when Javier Heredero, the hospital’s chief brain surgeon, endeavoured to remove any remnants of the suspected cancerous tumour which was taken out on Tuesday of last week.

Doctors at La Paz had earlier issued the following statement: “Mr Severiano Ballesteros remains stable within the gravity of the situation. After the historical stud, the tumour has been classified as an oligoastrocytoma, which affects astrocytes and oliodendrocytes, cells that cover and protect the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. It is located in an area that requires a very thorough approach of great complexity.”

George O’Grady, Chief Executive of The European Tour, said: “Not only I and everyone at The European Tour but also everyone in the world of golf is supporting Seve in his battle.

“I cannot start to say just how many people have sent their support to him through the Tour. There is not a telephone call or a meeting that starts without the other party asking for detail’s of Seve’s condition.

“We and everyone in the world of sport wishes him the quickest and fullest recovery.”

Ballesteros was taken to hospital on October 6 after collapsing waiting to board a plane from Madrid to Munich for a golf exhibition. He had one operation for the removal of the tumour and a follow-on procedure, a day of decompressive craniotomy, two days later when the brain began to swell.
