Singh Shares Lead in Sun City

World Number Two Vijay Singh of Fiji shares the lead with American Kenny Perry after the first round of the Nedbank Golf Challenge at Sun City, opening rounds of 65, seven under par, taking one stroke clear of Robert Allenby, Darren Clarke, Chris DiMarco and Adam Scott.

Singh, who earlier this month became the first European Tour Member to top the US PGA Tour Money List since 1995, was a model of consistency as he accumulated seven birdies, including the final hole, without a dropped shot at the Gary Player Country Club.

“The pins were in generous positions and good scoring was possible if you put the ball in the right places,” Singh said. “I played a really good first13 holes and them was lucky to make par of the 14th but it was good to finish with a birdie.

Clarke, second behind Ernie Els in the 2003 Volvo Order of Merit, also birdied the last, one of seven birdies he made in an opening 66. His only dropped shot came on the eighth hole.

Scott birdied four of the last five holes on his way to joining the four way tie for second place.

On a day of low scoring it was however a disappointing start for the defending champion and World Number Three, Els, as, he shot an even par 72 – the first time he has failed to break par in 29 rounds at Sun City to lie joint 16th of the 18 competitors in Sun City.
