Singh Wins US Tour Championship

Vijay Singh put two near misses behind him as he won the US Tour Championship presented by Coca-Cola, carding a final round of 67 for a two stroke victory over Charles Howell III.

Singh, an Honorary Member of The European Tour, has led after 54 holes on both previous occasions the Tour Championship has been held at East Lake Golf Club, Atlanta, losing a play-off to Hal Sutton in 1998 and finishing third in 2000.

But the Fijian made amends in the US PGA Tour’’s season-ending event with some wonderful golf on the final day to win the $900,000 first prize and finish third on the US Tour Money list with a career best of $3,756,653 behind Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson.

Singh bogeyed the first and had to settle for pars on the next seven holes before pulling clear with three consecutive birdies from the ninth and the chasing pack were unable to catch him. Howell III mounted the strongest challenge, holing a wedge on the 13th for eagle and birdieing the 17th for a closing 66 for a ten under par total of 270. But it was not enough as Singh missed only two greens on his way to a 12 under par total of 268.

It was his second win of the season, having claimed the Shell Houston Open in March and 11 PGA Tour title.

David Toms shot a 67 to finish third while European Number One Retief Goosen closed with a round of 67 to finish tied ninth and Open Champion Ernie Els finished joint 13th.
