The 150th Open Championship - Day three digest

Everything you need to know from day three at St Andrews.

St Andrews

Rory and Viktor took control, Shane was doing special things, The Open roars were even louder and Adam was serenaded on his special day in round three of The 150th Open Championship.

Here is everything you need to know from Moving Day at the Old Course.

Hovland and McIlroy set for Open duel

Viktor Hovland and Rory McIlroywent toe-to-toe on a thrilling third day and will share the lead heading into the final round. The playing partners entered Moving Day two shots off the lead but produced matching rounds of 66 to get to 16 under and hold a four-shot advantage over Australian Cameron Smith and American Cameron Young. World Number One Scottie Scheffler and South Korean Si Woo Kim were at 11 under, a shot clear of American Dustin Johnson and two ahead of English pair Matt Fitzpatrick and Tommy Fleetwood and birthday boy Adam Scott. But all eyes will be on the European Ryder Cup duo on the final day, as Hovland goes in search of a first Major Championship and McIlroy a fifth, and second Claret Jug.

McIlroy and Hovland

The shot. The roar. The Open.

Rory McIlroy is one of the most popular golfers in the world so hearing cheers follow him around the course is not a rare thing. But when he holes a bunker shot for an eagle to lead The Open at St Andrews? Just listen to this.

Lowry doubles up

To make one hole-out eagle on a par-four is rare. To make two in consecutive holes at the Old Course is quite frankly ridiculous. Shane Lowry, take a bow.

Spieth gets chatty

Jordan Spieth is well known for his conversation on course with both his ball and his caddie, as evidenced at various times during last week's Genesis Scottish Open, and he was at it again on Saturday. Not only that but he gave Jon Rahm a bit of a surprise when he drove the seventh. Never change, Jordan.

Happy birthday Adam Scott

Adam Scott was four days past his 20th birthday when he made his Major Championship debut at The Open in 2000. He has played in every one since, recording four consecutive top tens between 2012 and 2015 during a spell in his career when he won the Masters Tournament and reached Number One in the Official World Golf Ranking. On Saturday he turned 42 and celebrated with a 70 that moved him to nine under, with the fans on the 11th even singing Happy Birthday to him. He'll not forget this one in a hurry.
