Lee Westwood has been voted the European Tour’s Golfer of the Month for January after picking up his second Rolex Series win at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship.
Former World Number One Westwood was the unanimous favourite, picking up 76% of the public vote. Australian Lucas Herbert came in second with 14% after his maiden European Tour victory at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic.
Westwood’s victory in Abu Dhabi came somewhat out of the blue after confessing earlier in the week that he had not played much golf over the festive period. The 46-year-old certainly didn’t show it, however, shooting four rounds in the 60s in what was a vintage Westwood tee-to-green display as he went on to win by two shots at Abu Dhabi Golf Club. This win was Westwood’s 25th on Tour and his first since the 2018 Nedbank Golf Challenge hosted by Gary Player.
Herbert came in second place after his playoff victory against Christiaan Bezuidenhout at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic. In a week where the course showed its teeth in difficult conditions, Herbert was the only player in the field to shoot four consecutive rounds under par and won with a birdie at the second extra hole, on the iconic par five 18th.
Louis Oosthuizen came in third in the Golfer of the Month votes after back-to-back top five finishes at the South African Open and Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship. Oosthuizen’s final round in his homeland was highlighted by a hole-in-one on the eighth hole at Randpark Golf Club.
Branden Grace rounded off the voting for January after winning the South African Open presented by the City of Johannesburg. Grace shot a nine under par final round 62 to win by three shots.
Congratulations to Lee on a great start to 2020!
