Missed almost half of the 2009 season with a shoulder injury which halted the progress he made when he claimed his second Maybank Malaysian Open title, and his third European Tour title in total, in 2008, overcoming defending champion Peter Hedblom of Sweden after a two-hole play-off. It was his first appearance in Malaysia since his victory there in 2003. The year before, he became only the second golfer from India to earn Membership of The European Tour after Jeev Milka Singh. But he became the first Indian to win a tournament when won the 2002 Singapore Masters. In 2003 became the first Indian player to secure membership of the US PGA Tour when he graduated through the US PGA Tour School and he will play on the US PGA Tour once again in 2010. Started playing golf at Royal Calcutta after being encouraged to take up the game by his father, Bindi, at the age of 14. Went to high school in America to study Literal Arts for two years. Coached by South African Sam Frost, brother of David, who also coaches Singh.
