Continued his resurgence with a fine victory in the Ryder Cup Wales Seniors Open, holding off Angel Franco by one stroke at Royal Porthcawl. That victory, and a share of fifth place in the Mauritius Commercial Bank Open, helped him to finish 21st on the Order of Merit – his best return on the Senior Tour. Victory in the 2009 Bad Ragaz PGA Seniors Open ended a near fourteen year wait since his first Senior Tour title. That win, at the age of 63, made him the second oldest player to win in Senior Tour history behind Neil Coles. The South African has come agonisingly close to winning The Senior Open Championship, having finished second in the event three times. Won twice on The European Tour at the 1983 Benson and Hedges International Open and the 1986 Suze Open, and 20 times in his homeland. Won first time out as a Senior at the 1995 London Seniors Masters, before crossing the Atlantic to win the Ralphs Senior Classic. During 1996, in his first full season among the over 50s, he won four times in America and claimed the US Champions Tour Rookie of the Year Award. However, he says the biggest thrill of his whole career came in 1996 when he played with Arnold Palmer for the first time at the US Senior PGA Championship.
