Made his first appearance on the European Seniors Tour in 1990 but it was two years later that he enjoyed his greatest success, winning both the Senior British Open Championship and the Belfast Telegraph Irish Seniors Masters on the way to finishing top of the Order of Merit. Did not play in 2004 but retained his playing privileges for 2005 through his position on the European Seniors Tour Career Money List. Indeed, needs to make just one more start in 2005 to clock up 175 appearances on Tour. First made headlines when he won the 1970 South African Masters while still an amateur. He represented South Africa in three Eisenhower Trophies and then went on to win nine times on the South African Tour between 1972 and 1977. Also played a good deal of golf in Europe during that period and won his solitary European Tour title at the 1977 Callers of Newcastle Open at Whitley Bay Golf Club where he defeated Peter Butler, Angel Gallardo and Tommy Horton in a play-off.
