    Only started to take golf seriously at the age of 14 when his family moved to Florida from Maryland where he had played Little League Baseball. Won first amateur tournament at 15 and turned professional at 22 after attending Florida Southern College, where he studied marketing. Twice winner of US Open - on both occasions getting the better of the late Payne Stewart. Shot four rounds in the sixties at Baltusrol in 1993, equalling the US scoring record of 272 set by Jack Nicklaus in 1980. Pipped Stewart again in 1998 at Olympic Club in San Francisco after being seven shots behind with 15 holes to play. Won by one stroke to collect cheque for $535,000. Named as a wild card for the 1997 Ryder Cup by Tom Kite.
