China’s top golfer, Zhang first made history in January 2003 when he became the first Chinese golfer to win an event on The European Tour International Schedule, birdieing the final hole at Laguna National Golf & Country Club to grab the Caltex Masters, presented by Carlsberg, Singapore 2003 title from under the nose of favourite Ernie Els. In April 2004 he again entered the record books when he became the first Chinese golfer to play in the Masters Tournament at Augusta National. The former track and field athlete is no stranger to success however, having defeated Colin Montgomerie in the Alfred Dunhill Cup at St Andrews in 1998 and in October 2002, he held off the challenge of three time Major winner Nick Price to successfully defend his Macau Open title at the fifth play-off hole. First picked up a club at the Zhuhai International Golf Club. For years, golf had been banned in China under the Cultural Revolution but the ‘Open Door’ policy of the late 1980s helped change that and when the new club came looking for prospective players, Zhang was one of the first in the queue. Served his time as a caddie while learning the game and within a short space of time was appointed Caddie Master. His skill on the fairways was developing too and in 1989, he paid his own way to Shenzhen to play in the China Amateur Open which he won. Joined the Senior Tour in 2015 with his best result coming in the Prostate Cancer UK Scottish Senior Open as he finished tied fourth.
